9GLYPH / REFERENCE DOCUMENT
How our calculations work
9Glyph uses one deterministic Pythagorean calculation system. This page documents the exact V1 conventions behind the calculators, compatibility tools, and Numerology Reading.
Pythagorean system and letter map
9Glyph uses Pythagorean, sometimes called Western, numerology. Letters use the repeating values 1 through 9. The table below is generated from the same letter-value source used by the calculation engine rather than from a second hand-written mapping.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A J S |
| 2 | B K T |
| 3 | C L U |
| 4 | D M V |
| 5 | E N W |
| 6 | F O X |
| 7 | G P Y |
| 8 | H Q Z |
| 9 | I R |
Reduction, Master Numbers, and compounds
9Glyph uses one reusable digit-summing reducer with two modes. A preserve-Masters reduction stops at 1 through 9, 11, 22, or 33. A single-digit reduction always ends at 1 through 9.
- Master Numbers. 11, 22, and 33 are preserved only where the documented calculation calls for Master preservation. Their roots remain visible as 11/2, 22/4, and 33/6. They are not treated as superior numbers.
- Compounds. A meaningful unreduced total may be retained when it adds useful calculation context. 9Glyph does not treat every intermediate total as a special compound.
- Karmic Debt. 9Glyph recognizes 13/4, 14/5, 16/7, and 19/1 only when the recognized compound occurs at the meaningful final compound position for that calculation. Karmic Debt is presented as a growth lens, not punishment.
- Personal Year exception. Personal Year always uses single-digit reduction, so it never preserves a Master Number and never receives a Karmic Debt overlay.
Life Path, Birthday, and Personal Year
Birth dates are handled as plain calendar values rather than timezone-sensitive timestamps.
- Life Path. The birth month, birth day, and birth year are reduced separately with Master preservation. Those three values are added together, then the combined total is reduced again with Master preservation. Karmic Debt is checked only at that meaningful final compound position.
- Birthday. The actual calendar day from 1 through 31 is the Birthday compound. Its reduced value is shown while the original day remains available for interpretation and any valid Karmic Debt identification.
- Personal Year. The birth month, birth day, and target calendar year are each reduced to a single digit, then combined and reduced again to 1 through 9. Birth year is not used. 9Glyph uses the January 1 through December 31 convention and permits past, current, and future target years.

Birth-name calculations
Name calculations use the full birth name, including middle name or names when present. Given, middle, and family-name components are kept distinct so component-first reductions can be applied consistently. Mononyms, multiple middle names, and multi-word surnames are supported.
- Name preparation. Titles and suffixes are excluded from the intended input. If a likely title or suffix is entered, 9Glyph flags it rather than silently deleting it.
- Punctuation and spacing. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes, and other punctuation have no numeric value. They may remain visible in the original spelling while only supported A–Z letters become calculation tokens.
- Diacritics and scripts. Latin diacritics normalize to their base Latin letters for calculation while the original spelling remains available for display. Non-Latin names require a user-provided Latin transliteration in V1; 9Glyph does not silently invent one.
- Expression / Destiny. Every supported letter participates. Each name component is reduced first with Master preservation, the component values are combined, and the result is reduced again. Expression and Destiny use this one shared calculation; the two pages differ only in editorial lens.
- Soul Urge. A, E, I, O, and U participate as vowels. A Y participates only when the user classifies that specific occurrence as a vowel. Components are reduced first before being combined.
- Personality. Consonants participate. A Y participates only when the user classifies that specific occurrence as a consonant. Components are reduced first before being combined.
- The letter Y. Each relevant Y occurrence must be classified by the user as Vowel or Consonant. 9Glyph does not silently guess. The same occurrence-level choice is then reused consistently by Soul Urge and Personality. Expression / Destiny uses every letter, so it does not need a Y vowel/consonant decision.
- Karmic Lessons. 9Glyph counts which Pythagorean values from 1 through 9 appear anywhere in the full birth name. Completely absent values become Karmic Lessons. Y contributes its normal Pythagorean value of 7 regardless of its vowel/consonant classification. An empty lesson list is a valid result, not “perfect karma.”
- No-participating-letter cases. If Soul Urge or Personality has no participating letters, that dimension is reported as unavailable. No Number 0 is invented.
The combined Name Numerology Calculator uses these same certified name rules.
Engine-verified Life Path example
This fixed fictional example uses October 15, 1998. The values below are produced by the same Life Path engine used by the interactive calculator.
- Birth month10 → 1
- Birth day15 → 6
- Birth year1998 → 27 → 9
- Combine reduced values1 + 6 + 9 = 16
- Final reduction16 → 7
Life Path 16/7
The combined total is 16, so this example carries the recognized Karmic Debt compound 16/7. The 16 is used because it is the meaningful final compound, not merely because 16 happened to appear somewhere in an intermediate trace.
Compatibility and Numerology Reading
Life Path Compatibility uses one of 45 hand-authored unordered root Life Path pair profiles, with separate Master Number overlays where relevant. Reversing the two people does not create a different canonical root pair.
Full Numerology Compatibility compares Life Path, Expression / Destiny, Soul Urge, Personality, and Birthday. It uses categorical qualitative axes and describes interactions as shared, complementary, or contrasting. Birthday is supporting rather than dominant. 9Glyph does not calculate a compatibility score, percentage, star rating, or hidden points.
The Numerology Reading uses the same six values as the flagship Numerology Calculator: Life Path, Expression / Destiny, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday, and Personal Year. Its synthesis is deterministic and evidence-based. It selects only genuinely useful relationships and recurring patterns rather than forcing a quota. Personal Year contributes temporary context rather than permanent personality evidence. There is no randomness and no runtime AI.
Calculation and interpretation are different layers
The calculation layer is deterministic arithmetic. The same valid inputs and the same Y decisions produce the same derived numbers and structured traces.
The interpretation layer is a separately authored symbolic framework applied to those numbers. 9Glyph presents interpretations as reflective material, not scientific measurement, guaranteed prediction, medical guidance, financial forecasting, or predetermined fate.
Full personal arithmetic traces are shown only when 9Glyph actually calculated from the required personal inputs. Known-number and shared-derived states do not invent a fictional name, birth date, or calculation trace.
Where numerology traditions disagree
Numerology traditions do not use one universal rule set. Sources and schools can differ on questions such as when a Personal Year changes, how Y is handled, which compounds receive special treatment, and whether parts are reduced before or after they are combined.
9Glyph therefore does not blend competing conventions silently. It documents one V1 convention, uses it consistently across the calculators, and distinguishes the arithmetic rule from the later interpretation applied to the result.
